How To Pick The Right Carpet And Padding For Your Home

by Toni Gonzalez

If you are going to get new carpet for your home, then you also need to get new padding in most instances. Even if you have plush carpet, it will not feel nearly as soft if you do not have a good pad. Here are 2 tips for picking the right carpet and padding so that your feet and joints will be comfortable when you stand on the floor.

Padding Types

First, there are a few padding types. They typically come in 3 pound, 7 pound, 8 pound, and memory foam pads. The basic pad is 3 pounds, and it basically just provides a small barrier between your house foundation and the carpet. It will not be cushioned much and will not make your carpet feel comfortable when you stand for long periods of time.

You should always upgrade to a pad that is at least 7 our 8 pounds so that you will have much more support, and this will also create a better barrier against moisture from leaking onto the foundation.

If you want to get a memory foam pad, you may have to get a basic pad first, and then add the memory foam pad for extra support. You still need a basic pad for moisture issues, but the memory foam pad is not designed to be a stand-alone pad.

In addition, you can also get a waterproof pad for your flooring, and this is smart if you have children or pets that spill or have accidents. A waterproof pad should be added on top of another pad because the waterproof pad still needs additional padding if you want to walk comfortably on your floor.

Carpet Type

Second, the carpet style has a big impact on how the flooring looks and feels for many years to come. For example, extremely short fiber carpets work well in offices and on stairs, but they are not as good for living rooms and family rooms where people walk and play all the time because these carpets are not nearly as soft.

A shag carpet is another type that you can use in your home, but it is best to use this kind of carpet as a rug instead of covering your entire floor with it. This is because shag carpet gets matted down easily, it can hold a lot of dust, dander, and crumbs, and it is not as easy to keep clean.

If you want ideal carpet, choose something that has a medium fiber that is soft and that is a neutral color. Avoid overly dark colors as they will show dust and lint easily. Likewise, avoid white and cream carpets because they will look dirty really fast.

By understanding these factors, you can now find the right carpet and pad for your home. Contact a carpet supplier like National Carpet Mill Outlet for more information.
